Playa de la Misericordia / Misericordia Beach, Málaga

Address: Playa de La Misericordia Málaga, 29004, Málaga, 29004

Playa de la Misericordia is where Málaga’s industrial past meets its easygoing beach culture. Located just west of the city centre, this 2-kilometre stretch of dark sand is backed by towering 19th-century chimneys—remnants of a time when factories ruled the shoreline. The beach takes its name from the Casa de la Misericordia, a former hospice turned civic centre that quietly anchors the area’s story.

Locals love Misericordia not just for the vibe but for a bizarre daily ritual called la ola del Melillero—a surprise wave caused by the Melilla ferry slowing down as it enters the port. Blink and your towel’s soaked. You’ve been warned. Add beach bars, a summer cinema, and even a sailing area, and this spot hits that rare sweet spot between city grit and sun-soaked chill.
