Torre del Oro Seville

Address: The Golden Tower, P.º de Cristóbal Colón, s/n, Casco Antiguo, 41001 Sevilla | El Arenal

Torre del Oro (“Tower of Gold”) is one of Seville’s most recognisable landmarks—a 36-metre dodecagonal tower that’s watched over the Guadalquivir River since 1221. Built by the Almohad dynasty to guard the port and control access to the city, it was once part of a chain system that stretched across the river to block enemy ships. Over the centuries, it’s been a military outpost, a prison, and even a chapel. The name “Tower of Gold” likely refers to the way its lime and straw stonework glows in the sunlight, rather than any actual gold being stored there.

Today, the tower houses a compact but engaging naval museum with ship models, maps, and exhibits tracing Seville’s maritime history—especially during the Age of Exploration. Visitors can climb a narrow spiral staircase to the top terrace, where you’ll get panoramic views across the river to Triana and down toward the Cathedral and Plaza de España. It’s an easy, worthwhile visit, especially if you’re already walking along the riverside promenade. Romantic at sunset and educational for kids, it’s one of those classic Seville experiences that blends history, beauty, and location perfectly.
