Sierra de Castril Natural Park, Granada

Address: Sierra de, Castril, Granada

Tucked into Granada’s wild northeast, Sierra de Castril Natural Park is a rugged gem shaped by one thing: water. The Castril River carves straight through the park, feeding lush riverine forests and carving deep gorges and secret caves along its path. Walk the footbridge trail that hugs the river—you’ll pass trout pools, whispering willows, and maybe even spot a kingfisher darting by.

The park’s dramatic karst landscape is perfect for hiking, caving, or just geeking out on geology. Don’t miss the Peña de Castril Natural Monument, a crag topped with Moorish castle ruins and sweeping valley views. Nearby Castril town adds cultural punch with artisan workshops and a glassmaking legacy that goes back centuries.

As you climb, the forest shifts—from holm oaks to maple, oak, and finally the hardy brooms and junipers of the highlands. Trails like Cerro del Buitre offer prime vulture-spotting territory (bring binoculars), while pastures like Prados del Conde are dotted with Segureña sheep. It’s remote, raw, and utterly rewarding.
