Rota, Cadiz, Spain

Tucked between Cádiz and the Costa Ballena, Rota is a coastal gem where history and holiday vibes mix effortlessly. With 12 km of Blue Flag beaches, a lively old town, and a port that dates back to Phoenician times, this small Andalusian city is full of surprises. It’s romantic for sunset strolls, kid-friendly for beach days, and just the right size for exploring on foot.

Historically, Rota has seen it all—Romans, Moors, medieval nobles—and you can still feel it in its Moorish-style Castillo de Luna, now home to the tourist office. But modern Rota has its own rhythm too: from the Feria de Primavera in late April to seafood-heavy tapas bars serving local favorites like arranque roteño (think Andalusian gazpacho but chunkier), there’s always something fresh on the table.

For American visitors, Rota might ring a bell thanks to the US Naval Base, but beyond that, it’s very much a local town with soul. Come for the beaches, stay for the heritage—and don’t leave without wandering the dunes of La Ballena or catching live flamenco at a seaside bar.
