Address: Cta. de la Villa, 0, 29650 Mijas, Málaga

Tucked into the heart of Mijas Pueblo, the Iglesia Inmaculada Concepción is a quiet powerhouse of local history. Built between the mid-1500s and 1631—contrary to popular belief, not on top of a mosque—this church became the spiritual home for Christian settlers after the Catholic Monarchs took over the town. Its three naves, bell tower, and subtle stone-and-brick façade all whisper of centuries past.
Step inside and you’re standing over what was once Mijas’s main burial site. The interior has seen everything from 17th-century frescoes of apostles (rediscovered in 1992) to a fire in 1937 that destroyed irreplaceable parish archives. It’s a place where history lives just under the surface—literally.
