Parque Natural de la Sierra de Andújar

Address: C. Constitución, 7, 10710 Zarza de Granadilla, Cáceres

If you’re craving a proper wilderness escape, head north to Jaén’s Sierra de Andújar Natural Park. This rugged slice of Sierra Morena is one of Spain’s last true wildlife strongholds—home to wild boar, red deer, golden eagles, and the world’s largest population of Iberian lynx. The park spans nearly 75,000 hectares of untamed forest, oak meadows, and granite “bolos” (yes, those massive boulders have their own nickname).

It’s a dream for hikers, photographers, and birdwatchers. Trails like Jabalí–Encinarejo give you front-row seats to majestic raptors and dramatic landscapes, while the Encinarejo Reservoir offers tranquil picnic spots. It’s also rich in local culture—this is hunting country, with its own game-inspired cuisine (don’t miss the quail or deer) and an annual pilgrimage to the Virgen de la Cabeza Sanctuary that pulls thousands of people each spring.

Between its wildlife, ancient castles like Burgalimar, and villages that haven’t lost their Andalusian soul, this park blends nature and tradition like nowhere else. It’s not just a walk in the woods—it’s a step back in time, and a reminder of how wild Spain still is. Definitely kid-friendly, but with the solitude and drama to make it a seriously romantic getaway too.
