Address: P.º de la Muralla, 29650 Mijas, Málaga

Rising from the ruins of old Mijas and built brick by brick in the 16th and 17th centuries, the Iglesia Inmaculada Concepción is more than just a beautiful church—it’s the town’s historic soul. Located just off the main square, this stone-and-brick structure replaced earlier buildings (but not, despite rumors, a former mosque), and was consecrated in 1631 after nearly a century of construction.
The church has seen it all—pirate threats, burials beneath its floors, civil war looting, and even hidden frescoes of apostles revealed during a 1992 restoration. Its bell tower, known as the Torre de la Vela, was once a fortress lookout built after the town was nearly abandoned. Walk inside and you’re literally standing on centuries of stories, both sacred and turbulent.
