Sacromonte Caves

Address: Barranco de los Negros, s/n (acceder por, C. Verea de Enmedio, 18010 Granada, Spain

Perched on the hillside opposite the Alhambra, Sacromonte is Granada’s most soulful neighborhood—and the caves here are more than just quirky homes, they’re a living piece of Andalusian history. Carved into the rock by Roma communities centuries ago, these cave dwellings kept cool in the brutal summer and warm through the chill of winter, holding steady at a cozy 18–23ºC year-round. By the 1960s, over 1,500 caves were still in use—each uniquely styled, often with copper pans on the walls, religious prints, and family photos.

Today, many of these caves are open to visitors through the Museo Cuevas del Sacromonte, where you can walk through authentic interiors, learn about cave life, and soak in panoramic views of the Alhambra and Sierra Nevada. It’s also the birthplace of Granada’s most passionate flamenco—the kind that echoes through stone walls and lingers in the air. Visit at golden hour for the romance, stay for the raw, fiery culture. It’s part museum, part vibe check, and totally unforgettable.
