The Toro del Aguardiente in Gaucín, celebrated on Easter Sunday, is a wild, centuries-old tradition that blends pagan roots with religious devotion. This unique festival involves a bull running through the narrow streets, tethered to a 50-meter rope, guided by locals as it charges through the town. While its origins are lost to time, the festival has been a staple of Gaucín’s culture for centuries, with no records remaining due to past wars. The event attracts both locals and visitors, all eager to witness this thrilling spectacle that honors the Risen Christ with a powerful display of tradition and adrenaline.
The excitement kicks off on Holy Saturday with the Children’s Bull on a Rope, where young ones mimic the adults in playful games before the main event. On Easter Sunday, the bulls are released in a series of thrilling runs through the town, with the townspeople leading them along the route. One of the standout moments is the “doll”—a straw figure lowered from balconies to provoke the bull’s charge. With its deep-rooted history, strict regulations, and festive atmosphere, the Toro del Aguardiente is an unforgettable experience that celebrates both Gaucín’s past and its lively present.
